(updated June 26, 2017) A University of Delaware professor was fired for social media posts stating Otto Warmbier, who passed away after 18 months of brutality from the North Korean regime, “got exactly what he deserved” for being a privileged, white male and his type “think nothing of raping drunk girls at frat parties and snorting cocaine.”
“Is it wrong of me to think that Otto Warmbier got exactly what he deserved?” Professor Katherine Dettwyler wrote on her Facebook page. “He went to North Korea, for f*ck’s sake, and then acted like a spoiled, naive, arrogant US college student who had never had to face the consequences of his actions. I see him crying at his sentencing hearing and think ‘What did you expect?’”
She then suggests Warmbier’s brutal treatment and resulting death has had enough attention and veers off to the plight of North Korean citizens “suffering under the repressive government there.”
“Just because they are North Koreans,” she muses, “and not US citizens, we shouldn’t care about them?”
Hateful comments struck raw nerves in the comments section of a National Review story, “The Sickening Attack on Otto Warmbier Is Symbolic of the Left’s Hate Problem.”
“Otto is typical of the mindset of a lot of the young, white, rich, clueles [sic] males who come into my classes,” she stated. “These are the same kids who cry about their grades, because they didn’t think they’d really have to read and study the material to get a good grade. They simple deserve a good grade for being who they are. Or instead of crying, they bluster and threaten their female professors.”
Dettwyler then went on to knock Warmbier’s parents for raising him to think “he could get away with whatever he wanted” and then rubbed their faces in his death, commenting, “And of course, it’s Otto’s parents who will pay the price for the rest of their lives.”
Other commentators on the thread were downright disgusted with her comments. One post read, “You are a hate filled twisted person who should not be teaching at all. The hatred you spew at ordinary white college kids proves the point of the article. Please drop dead soon.”
She then went on to defend her position with racist, sexist, bigoted prose, claiming she was not talking about Warmbier specifically, but rather “white, rich, clueless males” in general, who are “like” him “who think nothing of raping drunk girls at frat parties and snorting cocaine.”
She also shot back at her detractors that not all students are deserving of her hate-filled wrath because she loves the “hard-working, sincere, non-arrogant college students.” However unfortunate, many white male students like Warmbier “don’t fall into that demographic,” as far as Dettwyler is concerned.
Dettwyler is a professor of anthropology at the University of Delaware who describes herself on Facebook as a “far left wing radical liberal” with the religious views of “lapsed Unitarian Universalist.” She was born in 1955, is married and has three children.
On “Rate My Professor,” one student said, “As the election between Trump went on she became crazier and crazier to the point of asking ‘are all Trump supporters against freedom’ and only having true as an option on the test.” Another said, “She is a destructive person, and doesn’t have the character to be teaching young people.”
One student commented Dettwyler is a “racist bigot,” while another said she “belittles students when they ask questions without her preferred terminology.”
The communist North Korean regime sentenced Warmbier to 15 years hard labor for allegedly stealing a poster from a hotel wall in January 2016. The Trump administration was able to negotiate his release back to the United States.
Warmbier was returned home to Ohio in a coma with severe brain damage June 13. He passed away six days later. Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. , stated, “Countless innocent men and women have died at the hands of North Korea…, but the singular case of Otto Warmbier touches the American heart like no other.”
As one student claimed, Dettwyler once stated that she “hates America and U.S. ways,” it is apropos her heart was only touched with bigotry for someone else’s all-American kid whose story touched the hearts of true Americans.
***This story was updated to show Dettwyler was fired for her social media posts concerning Otto Warmbier and his family. Justice has been meted out to Ms. Dettwyler.
